Humans are said to be emotional animals and so we do the same. We share it with our loved ones frequently.

But do you know how our emotions are made which can make moments and ruin our life?
They all come from unhelpful thinking styles that we lock in our minds. If we even want to be happy, those thoughts create a loop of weak feelings that bring us back to the same emotion.

Some examples like,
      (a) An open-minded person started to spend time alone inside his own sphere.
      (b) A relative said something unintentionally that put you in deep thoughts of anger and the words are repeating in your mind, which led you to put in an angry mood.

Meaning of unhelpful thinking styles?
So you got this I think, but let me clarify again. All its unhelpful thinking styles that create a loop of disturbing thoughts that affect your emotions to react negatively. They can stop you to empower yourself, limit your perspectives, create new problems, defying your opportunities and can make you feel hopeless.

What are those styles that affect you?
Well, all unhelpful thinking styles are equal, yet they dominate your life in a different way.

Now let's have a look at these styles:

1. Mental Filter
Negative decision lover
In this type of unhelpful thinking style, you have many doors open in your mind but you choose only that one which is negative. A flawed tunnel vision is created which ignores the rest of the possible situations.

2. Jumping to conclusions
This simply means that you get to the conclusions because you found something in the situation that doesn't feel good. Jumping to conclusions works as a future prediction that will affect you negatively.

3. Personalization
In this style of unhelpful thinking feelings like guilt and regret are your cheezy friends. If something goes misfortunate around, you may feel that it is happening because of you.

You did something which is harming the peace of everyone (even if you aren't partly involved in it).

4. Catastrophizing
With this style, you think that the problem is too big and disturbing but in reality, it seems unnecessary or small. This can lead to completely blowing things up in the next levels.

5. Black or white thinking
Between black and white, grey is a colour that is a mixture of both which explains an equilibrium point. But the person with a black and white thinking style can either see good or bad and happy or sad. They only see one extreme whether it's wrong or right(nothing like shades of grey).

6. "Should" or "must"
This is like creating pressure on self or other people by making inappropriate decisions to do certain things in the future. For example,
  • a. I should play some games tomorrow with my friends and you don't even know if your friends come or not.
  • b. Also, suggesting some ideas like you must do something or you should do this thing tomorrow.
This can be helpful at some point but by overdoing it can create unrealistic expectations that will make you struggle when the time will come.

7. Overgeneralizing

It simply means to get inside a loop of bad past experience which even is affecting your present now. Like before a week you had a terrible interview which is still in your mind today and when you know everything or the present one, still holding you back.

8. Labelling
Do you remember being bullied from a name that is so embarrassing to hear? If you are not that person then you would be the one who saw it in your school or college time. So, just by keeping it to yourself, you label people and self-according to their behaviour which creates a belief system and can strongly affect your beliefs.

9. Magnification and Minimisation
I know you are very much aware of it. It happens when you love or like someone so much that you forget what your value is.
It means you magnify the positive qualities of another person and at the same time minimize yours. You are easily devaluing yourself and can bring you down mentally.

How should you remove this:

It's very simple when you encounter such thinking you can.

  • 1. Find the possible way of knowing reality, by focusing on meaningful facts.
  • 2. Other ways of aiming in the same situation.
  • 3. Be kind and positive to yourself and let go of everything.
  • 4. Learn from the past and live in the present and find ways to be happy in the future.

While reaching here you found that you are using most of the thinking styles. But it's great news that you accepted your flaws and ran towards the bright side of your life.
